In Delhi, there is a multi management system for education particularly for school education. There are schools, managed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Directorate of Education & Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB). Number of schools are being managed by private organizations, trusts etc. But MCD and Directorate of Education have the major share of student population particularly at elementary level. MCD has the responsibility of imparting primary education only. There are six colleges, two vocational institutes and three teacher-training institutions in the district.
Educationally, District West consists of District West A & B in District West A, There are 3 Zones namely 14, 15 and 16. District West B consists of two Zones 17 and 18. MCD consist of 3 zones 34 wards of west 6 wards of Karol Bagh and 4 wards of Najafgarh. MCD zones have only primary school whereas the zones of Directorate have Sarvodaya schools (Classes I-XII) senior secondary schools (classes VI-XII), Secondary schools (Classes VI-X) and Middle schools (Classes VI-VIII). There are some schools having Nursery sections also. MCD has some independent Nursery schools also. Education department manages number of aided and recognized schools. There are 101 Non-Government schools under MCD, and 204 Non-Government schools under Directorate of Education. Some of the schools are double shifted. DIET regularly conducts Pre-Service and In-Service Programme for Heads of Schools (HoS) and teachers working in the West District of Delhi. The whole process of in-service training is carried out in a very scientific manner with the close cooperation of the DIET faculty and the Department of Education – MCD and the Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi.
